48 Urban Garden airstream food truck

There hasn’t been a restaurant that I wanted to visit that much as 48 Urban Garden. You see for almost 8 years I worked around the corner from the restaurant. Back then it had a different concept. It was an haute cuisine restaurant like the ones on Chef’s Table. LOVE the series by the way! It was out of my budget and I couldn’t find any “volunteers” to visit with me. So, I gave up.

The interiors

In 2014, the restaurant reopened under different management. And a different concept. It opened to the garden (especially in summertime) and got an airstream as a food truck! The place is covered with faux ivy to extend the garden feeling. The larger tables are ones that you find in parks and forests. You know, the picnic ones! I’d love to return in the summertime and dine in the garden. Which by the way feels very urban as it is surrounded by blocks of flats.

A few weeks ago, I was checking the list of restaurants participating in Dine Athens. I spotted 48 Urban Garden and without hesitation, I booked a table for last weekend.

The food

The event had a special dining menu, but some of the dishes or variants of them exist in the main menu. We started off with salad. It contained rocket, cherry tomatoes, gruyere croquettes, chili, and basil pesto. Then we moved on to appetizers. We got bao buns with pulled pork, melted Monterey Jack, pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole. It was Thai meets Mexican food. I love bao buns by the way!

For the main course, I got a burger called Hook Up. It was made with beef, cheddar, caramelized bacon, onion relish, and iceberg. My husband got Pollo Asado ala Mexicana. It contained chicken fillet, black bean salad, avocado, cherry tomatoes, and lime vinaigrette.

dessert with raspberry sauce, chocolate parfait and hazelnut cake

Last but not least, dessert! The dish which contained Hazelnut cake, vanilla cream, chocolate parfait with molasses with raspberry sauce and caramelized macadamia nuts.

The menu was full and keep in mind that this was no tasting menu. The portions were normal ones (bar the salad). I loved every dish I tried and was especially impressed by the burger. The meat was top notch and very well cooked. I might have found a new favorite burger and that’s a big deal.

So to conclude, I loved the place and I will return. 48 Urban Garden is located in the neighborhood of Ambelokipi on foot of Lycabettus Hill. It is a 10-minute walk from Ambelokipi metro station. Parking is tricky, but on evenings and weekends (when the restaurant operates) it’s not that hard to find a spot. Trust me I worked there and occasionally drove there. More information can be found on their website.
