Next up on my posts about my trip to Romania is the full itinerary that we followed. It turned out to be a pretty good one for us. So here’s an inspiration or a starting point for your trip to Romania.
Day 1 Bucharest & departure for Brasov
On the first day, I arrived in Bucharest with an early flight from Athens. I had around 4,5 hours to spend in the city before leaving for Brasov. My first stop was Herastrau park before heading downtown. I spent most of my day walking along Calea Victoriei. You can find more about things to see and do in Bucharest in my dedicated post.
In the late afternoon, we rented a car and drove to Brasov. It is a 2,5 drive if there is no blockage in the road. Speaking of roads, there is a highway until Ploiesti. From there going north there is only one lane per direction.
Upon our arrival to Brasov, we settled in our hotel and headed out to dinner. We walked around the old town post-dinner and headed back to our hotel.
Day 2 Day trip to Sighisoara
The next day we drove north to Sighisoara. On our way there we passed through forests and beautiful villages. One of them, Rupea, has a medieval fortress dating back to the 14th century. My absolute favorite though was Schachiz. We stopped there on our way back to Brasov but it was raining and we couldn’t explore much.
Sighisoara is located in the region of Transylvania and has a very well-preserved old town. It is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. The city was a settlement of Transylvanian Saxons. They. were craftsmen and formed guilds. Sighisoara’s towers are named after those guilds.
The city’s piece de resistance in the clock tower. It’s in the southeastern part of the old town and has 360-degree views over the city. It costs 15 lei to go up the tower. Before getting to the balcony you pass through the city’s history museum. As I said, the view is beautiful from up there. You can see the whole citadel, the new town, and beyond the river.
After having a late lunch we drove back to Brasov. It was raining on our way back so we didn’t venture out into the city that night.
Day 3 Brasov + Peles Castle
We spent our 3rd morning in Romania by exploring Brasov’s old town. The first stop was Tampa mountain. We rode the cable car up to the viewpoint and then back down again. We walked around the old town and in the neighborhood of Schei. You can read more about Brasov in my corresponding post.
Our next stop before going to Bucharest was Peles castle in Sinaia. It was my godmother that suggested that we visit Peles castle. We almost didn’t make it before closing time because there was a lot of traffic on the road from Brasov to Sinaia. But I digress.
Peles castle was the summer residence of King Carol I. The location is magnificent. It is surrounded by forest and has views over the Carpathian mountains. Its architectural style is unique: Neo-Renaissance with Gothic details. Inside also you come across a lot of ornate decorations. The Hall of Honor is probably the most impressive room in the palace. It’s the one you come across first. I couldn’t stop looking at the carved woodwork that covers 3 floors. I also liked the gardens. They have lots of stone statues and beautiful views over the mountains.
Next to Peles Castle, you can also visit Pelisor castle. It was Prince Ferdinand’s residence, nephew of King Carol I. It was closed by the time we visited it. We only saw it from the outside.
From Sinaia, we drove to Bucharest, where we arrived late in the afternoon. We went straight to our hotel where we spent the night.
Day 4 Bucharest
We spent our last day in Romania exploring Bucharest. We were staying next to the Old Town, so we explored that part of the city first. The next stop was of course the Palace of Parliament and Unirii square.
We ended our day by exploring the area around Ateneul Roman and Revolution square.
