The essential guide to Milos

It’s been a while since I shared a guide about a Cycladic island. So now it’s time to share with you everything you need to know about Milos, one of my favorite islands! Milos is an island of volcanic origin. Thus its landscape and especially the beaches so diverse and unique. Whether you dream of sinking your toes into the sand or exploring charming fishing villages, this guide will be your one-stop shop for crafting the perfect Milos trip. Getting to Milos The island offers 2 options for getting there: ferry or airplane. Personally I prefer the ferry because I…

Weekend in Sifnos

I always jump at any opportunity to visit the Cyclades. Especially during summertime. Last year I went to Syros for work. This year I spent a weekend in Sifnos for a christening. Between seeing old friends and having a good time I managed to visit the island’s most cute villages. What to see in Sifnos Platys Gialos is my favorite beach in Sifnos. It literally translates to the wide beach and this is exactly what you get. The beach is sandy, and you’ll come across a few beach cafes and restaurants where you can relax, have a drink or eat….

24hrs in Ermoupoli, Syros

Back in June, I visited the beautiful island of Syros for a day. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to explore the beaches. I did make most of my time though and explored the island’s main city: Ermoupolis. The city took its name from Ancient Greek god Hermes, messenger to the Olympian gods and god of trade and commerce. Ermoupolis used to be a prominent industrial and commercial city in the late 19th century. What to see in Ermoupoli, Syros Vaporia neighborhood: I started my exploration from Vaporia neighborhood which was the aristocratic neighborhood of Syros. Affluent refugees from Chios, Psara,…

24hrs in Corfu Town

Last month I had the opportunity to visit Corfu in the Ionian Islands for work. It’s been more than 10 years since I last visited so I had some catching up to do! A little bit of history The first thing that you notice upon arriving in the city is how Italian it looks (I also got that comment on Instagram). That comes as no surprise since Corfu was under Venetian rule from 1386 since 1797. During that time the Ottomans attempted to siege the island on a number of occasions and most notably in 1537 and 1716. All these…

The Essential Guide to Naxos

I’m continuing my guides to the Cyclades, bringing you tips about things to see and do in Naxos, which is the largest island of the Cyclades archipelago. The island has a lot to offer: beaches, archaeological sites, picturesque villages and of course delicious food! So, here we go! Beaches in Naxos What I loved in Naxos was the long sandy beaches. The water was crystal clear and inviting, albeit cold. In a nutshell the ones I liked the most are the following: Plaka – long beach with sand dunes, not very crowded Pyrgaki – this beach is on the South…

The essential guide to Rethymno, Crete

Being married to a Cretan means that I get the chance to visit this beautiful island multiple times per year. I’ve explored a lot of cities, villages and beaches but the fact is that I still have lots to explore! Ugh! Anyways! Today’s post is all about the picturesque city of Rethymno, which lies conveniently between the two large cities of Chania and Heraklion. It has a lot of similarities with the former as the Venetian influence is more prominent than in Heraklion (where they did a pretty good job on not highlighting the dry docks or the fortifications). Its…

Postcards from Amorgos Greece

Last month I had the opportunity to visit Amorgos island for work, but you know how the drill goes: spend the morning working and the afternoon sightseeing. Thankfully we had planned the trip after the daylight saving time date, so we had long afternoons to spend around the island. The lowdown on Amorgos Amorgos belongs to the Cyclades archipelago and is the easternmost island of the group, located almost in the middle of the Aegean Sea. It’s primarily a mountainous island, with raw beauty and whitewashed villages.  The island has two natural ports: Aegiali and Katapola. That’s where most of the accommodation…
