Housed in an elegant neoclassical building from the 1880s designed by Theophil Hansen, Athens Flair is a boutique hotel in central Athens. The building was once home to renowned actress Ellie Lambeti and was transformed into a six-suite hotel in 2023 by DS-Architects.
The interiors feature a neutral palette accented with jewel tones, creating a refined yet welcoming atmosphere. What stood out to me most, however, was the rooftop garden with beautiful views of Lycabettus Hill.

Coco-Mat Athens
Closest Metro Station: Evangelismos
This was the first Coco-Mat hotel in Athens, located on Kolonaki’s main street, Patriarchou Ioakeim. Designed in 1935 by architect Emmanuel Lazaridis, the building is a prime example of inter-war architecture and was converted into a hotel by Elastic Architects in 2015.
At street level, it appears to be a stylish mattress store — but upstairs you’ll find a minimalist design hotel. We visited the “Boulevard” rooms overlooking Patriarchou Ioakeim Street, and I especially loved the crisp white bathroom tiles and the numbered light fixtures. It’s an excellent option if you’re looking for a calm, central stay in Kolonaki.

Coco-Mat Athens Jumelle
Closest Metro Station: Evangelismos
Also located in Kolonaki, Coco-Mat Athens Jumelle combines old and new architecture across two connected buildings: a 1920s neoclassical residence on Irodotou Street, designed by Dimitris Fotiadis, and a contemporary building on Ipsilantou Street.
The neoclassical building was carefully adapted into a boutique hotel with four rooms, each incorporating crochet details that add warmth and texture. The two structures are linked by a courtyard featuring a cedar-wood waterfall. In the newer building, the rooms follow the same minimalist aesthetic as the original Coco-Mat hotel.
What I loved most was the grand staircase and stained-glass window in the historic building. The courtyard, meanwhile, offers a rare sense of calm for anyone wondering where to stay in Athens while remaining in a central yet peaceful neighborhood.

Periscope Hotel

Located on Charitos Street in Kolonaki, Periscope Hotel is part of the Donkey Hotels & Resorts. Compared to its sister properties, Periscope follows a more minimalist and understated design approach.
The lobby sets the tone with blue velvet sofas and a video projection of underwater scenes on the ceiling — a subtle nod to the hotel’s name. Clean lines and simple interiors make it a good choice for travelers seeking a calm, stylish stay in one of the most elegant neighborhoods in Athens.

The Modernist Athens

Housed in a post-war 1950s apartment building, The Modernist Athens embraces clean lines and a dark color theme. The building, characterized by bay windows, formerly served as the Embassy of Canada in Greece until 2015. Designed by Form Related Studio (also behind The Modernist Thessaloniki), the hotel spans six floors and features 38 rooms, 25 of which include balconies.
During the Open House tour, we visited the rooftop garden and the suite directly beneath it. The rooftop offers beautiful views over Evangelismos Park, the National Gallery, and the Acropolis. The 35-square-meter suite features a corner balcony and a private jacuzzi — a great option for a more elevated stay in Kolonaki.

Staying near Syntagma Square means you can explore most major attractions on foot while having excellent transport connections. If location is your priority, this is one of the best areas to stay in Athens.
Electra Rhythm Athens

Part of the Electra Hotels & Resorts group, Electra Rhythm Athens recently celebrated 60 years with a full redesign by Mutiny Architecture Studio. Located on Ermou Street — Athens’ main shopping street — this hotel is ideal if you want to stay right in the heart of the city.
The 2025 renovation refreshed both the rooms and common areas. You can choose between rooms overlooking lively Ermou Street or quieter options facing the back. On the first floor, guests have access to Electro Gym and meeting rooms, while the rooftop restaurant, Focal, offers Acropolis views and a menu inspired by contemporary Greek gastronomy.

Located just steps from Syntagma Square, Ergon House Athens blends modern hospitality with Greek deli culture. The reception is located on the first floor above the restaurant and food market.
The hotel features more than 30 rooms across four floors, available in five different sizes. During my visit, we saw two types — one overlooking the atrium and another facing the back of the building. The aesthetic is minimal and functional, with breeze block partitions (a nod to 1960s architecture) subtly dividing spaces.
One of the standout details? The bathroom basins are hand-carved from reclaimed marble treads sourced from old Athenian homes in Plaka. The communal lounge area also features woven textiles by Greek brand Zeus + Dione, adding warmth to the contemporary design.

Located just steps from Syntagma Square, In[n] Athens is a centrally located boutique hotel set in a building that used to be the residence of the Rallis family.
The property includes two annexes: one designed by architect Dionysis Sotovikis and the other by Stoa Architects. Several original architectural elements have been preserved, including the atrium, the staircase, and its distinctive handrail. The building’s eclectic character blends neoclassical and art deco influences, giving it a refined atmosphere.

New Hotel is located a few blocks from Syntagma Square. The building formerly housed the Olympic Palace Hotel, and elements of its original furniture were creatively repurposed in the redesign.
The transformation was led by Brazilian designers the Campana Brothers, whose playful and artistic approach defines the interiors. In several rooms, you’ll find the iconic Favela chair designed by the duo.
The hotel offers three different room decoration concepts. One features vintage postcards of Athens on the walls, another incorporates glass blue “evil eyes” (my personal favorite), and the third draws inspiration from Karagiozis, the traditional shadow-puppet theater character. Tucked away on a narrow street in the lively Psyrri neighborhood, L’Avventura Athens offers a more contemporary and vibrant stay in Athens. The building dates to 1979 and was transformed into a hotel by A_2 Architects.
Because of the narrow street frontage, the building slightly retreats from the street line, creating three recesses that enhance the façade’s depth. The balconies feature wave-like metal railings and integrated planters, while cotto tiles reinforce the indoor–outdoor design concept.
During our visit, we explored the café and a top-floor suite with Acropolis views. I particularly liked the bold color palette and the relaxed, Mediterranean indoor–outdoor vibe. It’s a great choice to stay in Athens if you’re interested in staying in a vibrant neighborhood.

Loom Athens
Closest Metro Station: Kerameikos
Located in the neighborhood of Kerameikos, Loom Athens is a small design hotel inspired by the art of weaving — as its name suggests. Designed by ATN Constructions, the façade features specially crafted ceramic brickwork, while terracotta and blue dominate the interior palette.
With just 11 rooms (three of them suites), Loom offers a more intimate stay compared to larger Athens hotels. Its location places you within walking distance of Kerameikos metro station and the area’s growing restaurant and bar scene.

Moxy Athens City opened in March 2022 in Omonia Square, an area that has recently evolved into a growing hotel hub in Athens. The building dates back to 1967 and was previously used as an office building and home to the Magistrate’s Court. It is known as the Saroglio Megaron, named after Petros Saroglou, an army officer and benefactor whose mansion once stood here.
The redesign by Kokkinou–Kourkoulas Architects and Divercity Architects draws inspiration from olive trees, reflected in the olive tones throughout the interiors. The most striking feature is the kinetic façade, designed to echo the movement of olive leaves in the wind.
The ground floor hosts the colorful lobby designed by artist b., which doubles as the reception and bar area. With 200 rooms, this 3-star hotel offers compact but efficiently designed spaces. Instead of traditional wardrobes, you’ll find open metal rails and hangers, maximizing functionality.

Skylark Athens stands on Omonia Square, replacing the former La Mirage Hotel, which had been closed since 2008. The original La Mirage was designed in the late 1970s by architect Sophocles Sarlis and occupies the historic plot that once hosted the renowned Kotopouli Theater.
The building was recently renovated by architect Stavros Peppas. The updated façade preserves the original marble detailing while introducing elegant vertical bronze accents. Inside, the design blends industrial elements with subtle baroque influences, creating a bold yet refined aesthetic.
