The Zillers Pastry Bar, an extension of the renowned restaurant, opened its doors in September 2023 near Mitropoleos Square. This boutique patisserie is helmed by the talented pastry chef George Platinos. Intrigued by the buzz surrounding The Zillers Pastry Bar, I embarked on a multi month mission to sample its offerings. In total, I tried 7 desserts, both on-site and to-go.

How the Zillers Pastry Bar “works.”

Initially, The Zillers Pastry Bar had a peculiar system: a separate menu for dine-in customers and a display case solely for takeaway. While some lauded this idea, I found it impractical. As my office was nearby, I could eat the desserts with the convenience of my own plate and cutlery. But what about customers who couldn’t?

Thankfully, they eventually relaxed this policy, allowing customers to indulge in the displayed desserts on site.

To write this review, I searched for dessert descriptions on Wolt and the Zillers website. While some were listed, others were not. I had to rely on my taste buds for those. Now, let’s get to the review.

The Zillers Pastry Bar Desserts

My first experience at Zillers was with the Clafoutis, accompanied by vanilla ice cream and raspberry sorbet. While the ice cream was enjoyable, the dessert itself wasn’t my favorite.

Next up is the Tarte citron, as I have an affinity for lemon pies. The lemon flavor is perfect, and I enjoyed the lemon pieces under the cream. The meringue on top is light and airy. The hard pastry shell though made it a bit challenging to eat.

Following my croissant tasting “challenge”, I tried the Pain au Chocolat. It was buttery, flaky, and had a perfect crunch. I rated it a solid 4 out of 5. For more croissant recommendations in Athens, check out my related post.

The Chestnut Tarte had a crispy shell and a light, airy filling of cream and cake. It also featured chestnut pieces, pear, almond cream, and pecan meringue, creating a delightful surprise with each bite.

The Religieuse Brest consisted of two choux pastries. The smaller one, filled with creamy mousseline, was a bit disappointing as it lacked the expected crispiness. However, the larger pastry, filled with rich chocolate hazelnut cream, was exceptional.

The Apple tart, while decent, had a hard shell and a simple apple filling. It wasn’t memorable enough for a future order.

Dome chocolat combined chocolate mousse, crème brûlée, praline, feuilletine, crostillant, and almond into a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. The hazelnut praline and feuilletine were a perfect pairing, and the overall experience was truly indulgent. I’d order this dessert again.
