After I finished my last dessert challenge I was at a loss for a foodie project. So it dawned on me: I would try (almost) every dessert at Bon Bon Fait Maison. And then I’ll write a review.

Why Bon Bon you might ask? Its curated selection of items, and creative menu make it the perfect spot to indulge in a little luxury. On top of that it is very close to my work. I always resort there for a post-lunch dessert!

A little back story…

I discovered Bon Bon in a magazine some 4-5 years ago. I read about this boutique patisserie in Kythira with delicious ice cream. Well, I wasn’t going to Kythira anytime soon so I didn’t think about it. Fast forward to late 2020 where on Instagram I saw that Bon Bon opened a store in Athens. As soon as I returned to work from maternity leave in 2021 I visited it and started tasting its desserts. Almost 2 years and many desserts later, here’s my review!

Pastries

I’ve tried 10 desserts plus many of their macarons and ice cream flavors. Without further ado let’s get to reviewing the desserts.

Paris Brest: This dessert is made with a choux pastry with crushed hazelnuts. Inside there is praline mousseline cream. My first reaction was that it is huge! I had high expectations about this dessert, but I’d prefer a lighter cream.

Gâteau basque: it reminded me of cheesecake and that’s why I got it. It has creme patisserie with semolina. On top hazelnut spread with hazelnuts. It was very light and pleasant. I’d like to see a smaller portion.

Milk Chocolate Sphere: This is my favorite dessert in Bon Bon Fait Maison. On the bottom, there is a cake imbibed with vanilla. Next, there is the milk chocolate glaze sphere with Madagascar vanilla light creme. On top, there’s a crunchy hazelnut nougatine. I always return to this dessert. It’s the right portion for me and the flavor mix is my favorite.

Tarte Tatin: The famous tart is made with caramelized apples, crumble with poppy seeds, and baked almond cream. I liked this tart very much and I’d get it again.

From Aegina to Ceylon: This dessert has a lot of elements! Pistachio dacquoise cake slow-cooked apples and Madagascar vanilla pastry cream. On top, there’s chiboust cream with Ceylon cinnamon and roasted pistachios from Aegina. The dessert was light and airy but I was not a fan of the taste. It was too cinnamon-y for me and I couldn’t taste the pistachio.

Macaron (large one): As much as I like small macarons, I didn’t like this one. The shell was very difficult to chew. The Madagascar vanilla cream was very light and pleasant.

Tsoureki à la tropézienne: This one was Easter special. The tsoureki was filled with vanilla and mascarpone cream which was very nice. The tsoureki itself was a bit dense for me. It had a pleasant taste despite being very messy to eat.

Creamy Cloud Nougatine: This dessert has a cream with a crispy nougatine tuiles. On the bottom there is an almond cake with flower water. I liked this pastry a lot. Especially that hint of flower water.

Forastero: This dessert was love at first sight. It has a brownie biscuit base and on top chocolate and raspberry mousse. On top there are fresh raspberries and airy chocolate-raspberry whipped cream. It was very light and pleasant to it. Definitely a repeat purchase!

Lemon Tarte: I’m a big fan of lemon tarts so I was excited to spot one on Bon Bon’s display! It’s very light and creamy with the right amount of lemon’s bitterness. For that reason I’ll get that one again!

Ice Cream & Macarons

Bon Bon Fait Maison also offers a variety of macaron and ice cream flavors. I tried those during my previous dessert challenges! My favorite macaron flavor is the passion fruit and milk chocolate one. It is a unique flavor combination that you won’t find anywhere else.

Conclusion

Bon Bon Fait Maison is a patisserie I like and recommend. From the high quality of ingredients to the artful presentation of the treats, everything is crafted with care and passion. The pastries have a French finesse to them. They aren’t overly sweet or have lots of heavy cream as Greek desserts tend to. Flavor-wise, not all of them are to my liking but each to their own. At the end of this “project,” I’ve singled out my favorites and will return to them. So if you’re craving something sweet and special, you know where to go. Bon Bon Fait Maison– deliciousness delivered.
