At the time of posting the temperature is 37 degrees. We had two heat waves by now. The temperature even went up to 44 degrees during the last weekend of June! Scorching I know. Thankfully it’s slightly cooler in the islands for those of you planning a trip to Greece. With the heat and the sun in mind, there are a handful of summer beauty essentials you need in your beauty bag.
Remember that Baz Luhrmann song from the late 90s? The one that includes the lyrics: “If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it
The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists”
Well, that tops my summer beauty essentials. Especially for Greece where the sun is scorching!
I’ve tried a handful of them over the years and I’m sharing a few options. My favorite face sunscreen is the Vichy Ideal Soleil 30SPF dry touch (not sure if the exact version exists abroad). A close second comes the La Roche Posay Anthelios 50 SPF Comfort. It’s slightly greasy but I’m using tretinoin lately so it counteracts the dryness. I also tried the La Roche Posay Anthelios 30SPF anti-shine but it was very hard to apply and leaves a white cast.
As for body sunscreen, I have a firm favorite for the last 5 or so years: Nivea Protect & Bronze 30SPF. Not sure if it does boost bronzing, but I like the feel of it and the level of protection. I also avoid sprays as they tend to run out very quickly.

Hydrating Moisturizer & Toner
One thing you need after sunbathing is moisture and hydration. Opt for lightweight creams, serums and toner. For the past year, I’m using spray toners. Favorites include Clinique’s Moisture Surge, The Body Shop Aloe toner and Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir (c/o).
As far as moisturizers go, I love Vichy’s Aqualia Thermal (light cream). I’m currently using Caudalie’s Moisturizing sorbet. I admit that the pink color drew me in, as well as the fact that they cater for sensitive skins.
Body wise I use an after sun lotion instead of a heavy body cream. My favorite is Hawaiian Tropic’s Silk Hydration After sun. It feels so nice and cooling. If you are looking for an after sun that caters to sunburn as well, then try out Korres Cooling After Sun with Yoghurt. Yogurt is known to have a soothing effect on sunburns (so you know, if anything else fails…)
I’m not a heavy makeup wearer but during vacations, I end up using even less! One thing I love using is a bronzer. My first bronzer was a massive Lancaster one that I never hit pan on! For the last year, I’ve loved Soap & Glory’s Wonderbronze that a friend of mine brought over from the UK. I also wear mascara (non-negotiable). The one I’ve been using lately is Maybelline’s Push Up Angel.
Colorful Nail polishes
Last but not least I finish my looks with colorful (and sometimes pastel) nail polishes. Last year I discovered L’Oreal’s oil infused nail polishes and I’m a fan ever since!
