4 design hotels in Athens

Since I live in Athens I have zero experience on how hotels in this city look like! So, last month as I was perusing Open House list I spotted some design hotels in Athens that I wanted to visit. I not only saw those hotels but also came back with suggestions on where to stay during a city break in Athens!

1) Periscope Hotel

Periscope Hotel is part of Yes Hotels, a collection of 5 design hotels in Athens and Kifisia. Their first hotel was Semiramis in Kifisia, designed by Karim Rashid. Periscope is located on Haritos Street in Kolonaki and it’s very simple and minimal. The lobby has blue velvet sofas and a video projection on the ceiling with underwater scenes. The hotel’s name is Periscope after all! We got to visit the Presidential suite, which has marvelous views over Athens and a smaller room.

2) Coco-Mat Hotel

I love Coco Mat’s minimalistic vibes so when I saw the hotel on the Open House list I knew I wanted to visit it. It is located on Kolonaki’s main street Patriarchou Ioakeim on top of their mattress store. When passing by you think that it’s a lovely mattress store. But no, this once modernist block of flats now houses a degign hotel, ideal for minimalists. We got a glimpse of the “Boulevard” style rooms that overlook Patriarchou Ioakeim street. I fell in love with their white bathroom tiles and those number lights!

3) New Hotel

New Hotel is located a few blocks away from Syntagma square. The building used to house Olympic Palace hotel and now is transformed to a design hotel. The ground floor features wooden pieces from Olympic Palace’s furniture.

The Brazilians Campana brothers redesigned the hotel. In many rooms, you come across the Favela chair, which is designed by the pair. The hotel features 3 types of room decoration and we visited one of each. The first type old postal cards of Athens on the wall. The second one features glass blue evil eyes on the walls (my favorite decoration). The third one features scenes from Karagiozis, a popular hero of shadow-puppet theater.

4) Alice Inn Athens

Last, but not least a design hotel in Athens which used to be a house built in the 1920s. The building was destroyed during the major earthquake in 1981 and then was. Alice Inn Athens opened in 2012 and is named after the owner’s grandmother. The Inn features 4 suites and we saw 2 of them: The Mighty Aphrodite suite and the Harry Belafonte Suite  Alice Inn has a home feeling. It has a colorful living room, communal kitchen and a lovely yard to chill out on those summer nights!

I hope you enjoyed my portrayal of those design hotels in Athens. If you are visiting my city and would like to splurge then do check them out!
