We all know Andy Warhol as the leader of the American Pop Art Movement, but did you know that he started off as an illustrator working mainly with fashion magazines? No? Me neither!
That’s why I was more than happy to stumble upon an exhibition of his illustrations in Montreal’s Museum of Fine Arts back in November. On display there are fifty posters and almost a thousand illustrations found in 400 magazines that belong to the collection of Paul Maréchal. Although Warhol sifted from illustration to painting, he still got commissions for advertisements and magazines. Take the Absolut Vodka bottle for example that was re-launched last year. The collaboration took place in 1985 and it was Warhol who suggested to Absolut to collaborate with other artists as well.
The exhibition runs until March 15, 2015.
